There's always one of these people. If you ask them what sort of music they like, they'll give a blank stare and say... "Oh, I like EVERYTHING!" And they don't mean the songs by Lifehouse or Stereo Fuse. They mean they like all music. To me, that just doesn't make any sense. How can you not prefer one song over another? Can you really listen to both BrokenCYDE and Radiohead and then decide you like both of them? When someone says they like "everything" in terms of music, it just means that they don't really appreciate music. They probably zone out and aren't even aware of what they're listening to half the time. They like everything, but love nothing.
The chord progressions, the lyrics, the melodies themselves are lost on these people, and they are probably the cause of god-awful "mix" stations on the radio. Mix stations play such a schizophrenic music selection that it's hard to stay listening to them from more than two songs. One minute, you're hearing Guns 'n Roses. The next, it's Lady Gaga, and you're changing the station as fast as your slow reaction times allows you. No radio stations appeal to me as much as 104.9 (KCNL) about ten years ago. I guess the demographics have been shifting, so maybe my taste in music is no longer going to be represented as much they were ten years ago, but I still don't understand the point of these "variety" stations.
I understand they're designed to be piped into workplaces and shopping centers that don't have their own mixes set up; Music designed to play in the background as people go about their day, rarely paying attention to the crooning of various artists. The worst offender of music lately is "LIVE 105." They seem to think the only bands that existed in the 90s were Sublime, Green Day, Nirvana, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I'm sure I missed a couple in there, but don't expect to ever hear Fuel, Tonic, Vertical Horizon, SR-71, Lifehouse, Eve 6, or Third Eye Blind. Those bands have either faded out completley or been determined to be "Hot Adult Contempoary" rather than "Active Adult Alternative" or whatever latest buzzwords they use for radio formats these days.
To make matters worse, Live 105 proceeds to play Paramore, and then go straight to the next song without admitting to it, as they are probably so ashamed that their target audience of 15 year old emo kids requested that crap. But it'd be silly of me to blame radio stations for causing people to not have any real taste in music. Some people just like non-committal answers, they don't want to offend anyone by insulting anything, so they just stay back and decide everything is equally as good and worthy of their time, no matter what.
I've always gotten a lot of flack for my music taste, or lack thereof, and any time I mention I didn't like rap, I'd be told I've only heard "mainstream" rap. I've given the other rap a chance. I enjoy a few nerdcore rappers, even. But it's just a sort of music I enjoy, and I wish more people could admit they actually don't like one kind of music. When we insist that we like everything out there, we lose our own opinions on the matter.
